How to Succeed NOW!

There is one key area in which you have the opportunity to dramatically increase your business and income and do it now! Interestingly, how to accomplish this is contrary to what most stylists and owners think they need to do! That means it’s not going to a cutting or foiling class and it's not getting more new clients.

The key is to "keep" (retain) more of the existing clients you currently service and more of the new clients you're getting. It’s actually as simple as that! I know, I know. You've heard it before but have you really paid attention to it? Have you done anything to see how many new and existing clients don't come back? Have you done anything to make sure your new and existing clients do come back?

We all think that we do a terrific job with our clients. Well if that's the case then you're really busy and making lots of money! The sad fact is only 1 out of every 3 new clients come back and only 65 of every 100 existing clients will still be with you in a year!

A very simple way to measure if we are doing a great job is to print the Retention Reports from the salon software you're using. If you don't use salon software, keep a running list of the clients and when they visit. List the clients each day and each week. Most stylists will see between 25 – 60 clients over the course of a week. If you have a receptionist, it’s a great job for them to compile a list of the clients for each stylist and either give it to them or just keep it at the desk. Do this for a period of 4 months. At the end of the 4th month, go back and look at all clients that were in during the 1st month. Any client that has not been in is considered LOST!!!

If you saw 100 clients that 1st month, and you have 20 that have not returned, that means that you have to get 40 new clients and keep 20, which is 50% retention, just to keep even. Make sense? Just being aware of the fact that not every client comes back makes us acutely aware of how strong we are as a business and how strong we are as a stylist. If we are losing clients, how do we then turn it around and keep them? That is the million dollar question!

REASONS CLIENTS LEAVE!!!
#1. People have more money than time, so stay on time. More than 5 minutes late is a big problem for clients. It means you'll rush and be late for the next client. You know the ripple effect it causes throughout the day.

#2. Clients can’t get an appointment when they want one. There are a lot of very good stylists out there and if the client didn’t rebook an appointment with you and can’t get in at a convenient time for them, see ya!

#3. We did not give them the time and attention that they deserve for the money they are spending. Your focus may be on the last client that didn't tip so well or on the next client you're going to be late for. Stay in the moment with the client in your chair. If you charge $40.00 for a haircut and you do a 30 minute haircut, a client is paying at the rate of $80.00 an hour for your time. If you’re charged $80.00 an hour for something, doesn’t it get your attention? And remember, that doesn’t even include the tip.

#4. Service related issues. If a clients color has faded four weeks after they have had it done, they'll notice and they won’t like it! They don’t think that its worth the $40, $60, $80 or $100 that they paid for their color. They're one step closer to going to another salon or doing their color "out of a box"!

Just think that if we can teach you a way to keep 20 more clients in your salon per month or 4 more clients in your schedule each month for a stylist, what can happen to your income.

Here's an example based on a salon getting 20 new clients a month over 6 months:

Month #1 20 spending $50.00 = $1000 per month
Month #2 40 spending $50.00 = $2000 per month
Month #3 60 spending $50.00 = $3000 per month
Month #6 120 spending $50/00= $6000.00 per month

In 6 months your business has increased $21,000!

Here's an example of a stylist keeping just 4 more clients a month over 6 months.

Month #1 4 spending $50.00 = $200. $100.00 for you in
commission and $30 in tips.

Month #2 8 spending $50.00 = $400. $200.00 for you in
commission and $60 in tips.

Month #3 12 spending $50.00 = $600. $300.00 for you in
commission and $90 in tips.

Month# 6 24 spending $50.00 = $1200. $600.00 for you in
commission and $180 in tips.

In 6 months you're sales have increase $4,200!

You've earned $2,100 and at least $630 in tips! Not bad! Can you imagine someone going to their boss and asking for a $4200 raise this year. That’s what we are talking about!!!

Change can be dramatic and it can be fast! Let us help you!
